Mount Chimborazo is the point on Earth closest to space - Geography Facts | Truepedia
Mount Chimborazo is the point on Earth closest to space
Although Mount Everest is the highest above sea level, Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador is the farthest from Earth's center. Because Earth bulges at the equator, this volcano sits about 2 km closer to the Moon and stars than Everest!
The "Highest" Point: Why Distance from Earth's Center Matters
When we measure mountains, we usually use Mean Sea Level. By that logic, Mount Everest is the king. But if you measure from the center of the Earth, the trophy goes to Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador.
The "Pot-Bellied" Earth
Earth is not a perfect marble; it's an oblate spheroid. Because it spins so fast, it bulges at the middle (the equator) and flattens at the poles.
This bulge adds about 21 kilometers to the Earth's radius at the equator.
Since Chimborazo sits almost exactly on the equator, it gets a massive "boost" from this bulge.
Chimborazo vs. Everest
Everest: 8,848m above sea level, but located far north.
Chimborazo: Only 6,263m above sea level, but sitting on the bulge.
The Result: Chimborazo's summit is roughly 2.1 kilometers farther from the Earth's core than Everest's.
In Short
Everest is the highest for climbers starting from the sea, but Chimborazo is the highest for anyone looking down from the stars. It is the literal "edge" of our world.
