When you think of islands, you might think of the Caribbean, but Sweden actually has over 267,000 of them - most are tiny, peaceful, and wild!

If you tried to visit one Swedish island every single day, it would take you more than 700 years to see them all! Sweden officially claims the world record for the highest number of islands.
Sweden has approximately 267,570 islands. While countries like Indonesia or the Philippines are famous for being island nations, they only have about 17,000 and 7,000 islands respectively. Sweden's count is so high because its coastline and lakes are filled with everything from large inhabited islands to tiny rocky bumps sticking out of the water.
Many of these islands form "archipelagos" (groups of islands) near big cities like Stockholm. The Stockholm Archipelago alone has about 30,000 islands! However, most of Sweden's islands are very small and uninhabited. In fact, only about 1,000 of them have people living on them year-round.
Because of a special Swedish rule called Allemansrätten (The Right of Public Access), people are allowed to visit almost any island they want, even if it's privately owned, as long as they respect nature and the people living there. This makes Sweden a paradise for boaters, campers, and nature lovers.
Sweden is the island capital of the world with over 267,000 islands. Although most are tiny and empty, they create one of the most unique and beautiful geographical landscapes on the planet.
