Think of the liver like a superhero. If you cut a piece away, it can grow back to its full size in just a few weeks! It's the only organ that can rebuild itself from scratch.

In Greek mythology, Prometheus was punished by having an eagle eat his liver every day, only for it to grow back each night. It turns out, ancient myths were actually onto a real biological fact: the liver is the only organ in the human body capable of total regeneration.
The liver is incredibly tough. Even if a surgeon removes 75% of it, the remaining healthy part will immediately start working to rebuild the whole organ.
Most of our organs heal by creating "scar tissue" (like a cut on your skin). But liver cells, called hepatocytes, act like tiny stem cells. When they sense damage, they start dividing rapidly until the liver reaches the perfect size for your body. Once it's big enough, they simply stop growing.
This amazing power is why "living donor" transplants are possible. A healthy person can donate a piece of their liver to someone in need. Within a few months, both the donor and the recipient will have full-sized, healthy livers!
The liver is nature's ultimate survivor. As long as it has a small, healthy foundation, it can rise from the ashes like a phoenix to keep your body clean and healthy.
