Diamonds are the toughest rocks on Earth, but they are made of the same stuff as coal. If you get them hot enough in pure oxygen, they turn into invisible gas and vanish completely!

We usually think of diamonds as "forever," but science shows they can be quite fragile under the right conditions. Because a diamond is just a very organized pile of carbon atoms, it can burn just like a piece of charcoal.
If you take a diamond and put it in a room full of pure oxygen, and then heat it up to about 763°C:
The most amazing part is that because the diamond is pure carbon, there is nothing left behind. No soot, no ash, and no tiny pieces of rock. It literally disappears into the air you breathe.
Diamonds are the hardest natural material to scratch, but they aren't invincible. They are essentially a fancy form of fuel that can evaporate if things get too hot!
